To observe the interference pattern of light in the Michelson interferometer,
To measure the wavelength of light using the Michelson interferometer.
Categories: Optics and Waves Laboratory
Michelson interferometer is experimental setup that can be measured the wavelength of light. It consists of a fixed mirror, a moving mirror, and a beam splitter. The beam coming from the light source is splitted into two equal beams at the beam splitter, which get reflected at the mirrors and combine at the beam splitter to create an interference pattern on the screen.
The optical path length travelled by one of the beams can be changed by moving the moving mirror. As the difference in optical path length of the two beams change, the interference pattern on the screen also changes. From this, the wavelength of light can be determined using the distance that the mirror moved by.
