As a physical technique for getting a fairly uniformed magnetic field is to use a pair of circular coils which are called Helmholtz coils. For a given coil radius, you can calculate the separation needed to give the most uniform central field. With the Helmholtz experiment you will be able to measure the magnetic field and collect your data to check your improvement.
